Overview
There are twelve of us living here in our three houses, but I am the only one of this age: too old for school but too young to leave home yet, waiting to see which way in the world I am pointed to go. The problem of Dmitri is hardest by far for her, as he is the baby brother she mothered as much as her own mother did, and sees now in her later years what has come of that, of raising him up among an absence of men. The ID bracelet glimmers in the sun, hanging heavy on his graceful wrist. The burning feeling has spread to the tips of my fingers and toes and into my hair now, it seems.
