Overview
Introduction: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma are hematologic malignancies of the lymphatic system with increased prevalence in young adults. Limited research has explored the experiences of young adults with lymphoma during acute survivorship, defined as the period of cancer survivorship at diagnosis, relapse, or remission when a cancer patient is actively receiving acute medical treatment or intervention.Purpose: This study aimed to uncover the experiences of young adults with lymphoma receiving treatment or intervention during acute survivorship.Method: The qualitative hermeneutic interpretive phenomenological method was implemented in this study. Purposive sampling was utilized to recruit young adults with lymphoma who had received acute medical treatment within 90 days from one National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center in the Northeastern United States. Colaizzi’s data analysis method was used to evaluate the data and create a comprehensive description of the experience. Results: Eight young adults with lymphoma receiving medical treatment or intervention during acute survivorship were enrolled and participated in the study. Five themes were developed to describe the experience of young adults with lymphoma during acute survivorship, including discovering cancer, introducing cancer, fostering relationships, uncontrollable factors, and reflections and growth.Implications: This study adds to the limited body of research in the young adult lymphoma population by exploring their lived experience during acute survivorship. Consistent with prior research on young adults with lymphoma, cancer was challenging to diagnose among participants in this study. Through post-diagnosis, young adults with lymphoma were determined to safeguard parents and close family members from the emotional burden of cancer. The bond between the participants, medical oncologists, and nurses offered a dynamic structure to endure during acute survivorship. Nurses' physical and emotional presence was a substantial factor that enabled study participants to cope with the lymphoma diagnosis and the subsequent treatment. In this study, the lived experience of young adults with lymphoma underscores the importance of distinct and structured post-diagnosis survivorship care.
