Overview
While the 79 keynote lecturers for the TMS 2020 Annual Meeting & Exhibition (TMS2020) mirrored the demographics of US and non-US. TMS members, only 8.5% of the US keynote lecturers were women. In contrast, among the non-US keynote lecturers, 28.1% were women. It was found that the composition of the organizing committees had a potentially crucial impact on these results. For male-only organizing committees, women made up only 4.8% of their keynote speakers. In contrast, whenever at least one woman was part of the committee, the percentage of women being invited for a keynote lecture increased by an approximate factor of four, up to 20.0%. Of course, due to the limited number of keynotes those values tend to fluctuate from year to year. A similar discrepancy can be observed regarding the origin of the organizing committees. In cases in which symposium organizers were all US-based, more than 70% of the keynote lecturers worked also at an US institution.
