Overview
Nicetas Paphlago's Life of Ignatius is closely linked with the so-called anti-Photian collection, a body of material compiled about 900 A.D. in support of the Ignatian side and in condemnation of the part played by Photius in the first major schism between the Greek and Roman Churches. Since is was written soon after the events described, the Life of Ignatius, despite its obvious bias, provides important source material for the history of the period. Eleven manuscripts containing the Greek text of the Life of Ignatius survive in various European libraries, and working from microfilm copies, I intend to examine and collate all these versions with a view to establishing the text that most closely approaches the lost original. Important variant readings will be recorded separately in a critical apparatus and allusions to Biblical passages will be identified and cross-referenced. I shall also translate the work into English and provide a name-index for persons mentioned in the text. In the introduction I intend to give background information on the author and his work and to discuss the most likely date of composition. I shall also describe how the individual manuscripts are related to one another on historical as well as linguistic grounds. Hence, wherever possible I shall provide information or speculation on the circumstances of their copying as well as giving the technical detail of which manuscript was copied from which. I shall also explain the editorial conventions I have followed in setting up the text.
