Overview
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have reshaped military strategies and capabilities, creating opportunities and challenges for combatants. Research within the available literature revealed a gap in tactical methods for UAS deployment. The researcher examined UAS usage in Yemen, Gaza, and Ukraine from January 1, 2021, to January 1, 2024, focusing on how employment methods affect battlefield outcomes and U.S. dominance. The researcher addressed the questions: How can the Joint Force Commanders best align UAS capabilities to support joint operational requirements, how can the U.S. advance UAS technologies and tactics to optimize contributions and sustain its military advantage, and what are the underlying causes that have hindered the successful integration of manned and unmanned aerospace systems for effectively countering challenges from peer and near-peer adversaries?The sample in this research is the conflicts in Yemen, Gaza, and Ukraine. Employing a qualitative research design and a multiple-case study approach, the researcher examined the employment methods of UAS in Yemen, Gaza, and Ukraine. Data analysis revealed that combatants in Yemen and Ukraine favor one-way UAS, while in Gaza, combatants prefer reusable UAS. The results revealed that the U.S. military must enhance UAS capabilities and integrate UAS into command and control (C2) frameworks. The conclusion is that UAS procurement and advancing AI capabilities are essential for U.S. dominance. The implications of this research are that Joint Force Commanders should integrate UAS into C2 structures leveraging their expendable nature to enhance operational flexibility. Future research should focus on optimizing UAS capabilities and developing UAS countermeasures.
