Overview
The Kingdom of Heaven as taught in the form of parables by Jesus in the pericope of Matthew 13 reveals the socio-cultural Sitz im Leben of the audience. By teaching in this manner, Jesus was able to unveil the hidden things of the Kingdom of Heaven in a way his audience would understand. Through this style of teaching, Jesus provides rich theological and eschatological truths. The truths that are examined include the Kingdom of Heaven as here and now as well as the Kingdom of Heaven, which is to reach its fulfillment in the eschaton. This thesis explores these truths through the eyes of the original audience, through the eyes of Matthean theology, and ultimately through the words of Jesus. This thesis will also open the door to further understanding humanity’s role in the Kingdom of Heaven as taught by Jesus in Matthew 13.
