Overview
All of the play's characters, in Taymor's vision, are caught somewhere on the evolutionary ladder and suffer relapse and regression as well as sudden spikes and surges in their struggle for adaptation and liberation. Maternal powers trump intellectual ones (or does the drive for the survival of the species actually link up with personal desire?) as Prospera releases Miranda to the world just as she has released Ariel and Caliban. Russell Brand's Trinculo, with a thin red silk scarf wound about his neck and a red and black breast (whoops-vest), seems like an exotic Galápagos frigate bird or mutant albatross. The Court Party is initially seen navigating what appears to be an African savannah with tall saw grass and what looks like an Acacia tree in the background.
