Discusses Victorian portrait photography, with particular reference to the work of the London-based French photographer Camille Silvy. The author describes Silvy's works Mrs Holford's Daughter (1860; illus.), Mrs Holford's Daughter (with a woman) (1860; illus.), The Daughter of the Hon. Mrs Charles Lindsay (1861; illus.), and Caroline, Duchess of Montrose (1860; illus.), assessing the provocative nature of the children's poses in the first three images, and the flirtation evident in the latter, within the context of Victorian sexuality and in comparison to photographs taken by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll).
