Overview
First the crew of HMCS Protecteur battled a raging engine fire, then for a week battled Murphy's law--the rough seas, the broken towline, all with limited power and only the barest necessities. Today the charred hulk finally made port at Pearl Harbor, and the CBC's Chris Brown is there. Yes, it's 45 years old and we've been out doing the business for the last eight months since the ship came out of refit, there's been no issues. The fact is ships sometimes have fires at sea. All right, Chris, thank you. Chris Brown in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Even if the Protecteur survives this fire, it's still a member of a dying breed. It's one of two fuel supply ships serving the Canadian navy. Its sister ship operates in the Atlantic. They have more than 80 years of service between them and use technology that was already old in the 1960s. Both were set to be retired by 2017.
