Overview
A study of pastoralism in Sweden to determine its extension. It is based on an analysis of the distribution of the faebod, the classical Swedish pastoral chalet. It is proposed to eliminate the South Swedish chalets, which are concerned only with the production of meat (pork, beef) & the surveillance of non-milk animals (heifers). The true faebod is an 'agri'al workshop' rather than a merely pastoral one, according to the formula of A. Demangeon. It must include the production of milk. The distinction between 'milk mountains' & 'fat mountains' is fundamental. This distinction was established by J. Froedin & his disciple E. Bylund. True pastoralism is thus confined to Northern & Central Sweden. A map gives the historical shifts of the borderline & regional variations. I. Langnas.
