Overview
Examines the official version of the political upheaval in Burma in 1988, particularly the role of the military, as depicted in the state-controlled Burmese press. Official press versions of the 1988 upheaval depict the prodemocracy movement in Burma as fractionalized, unrepresentative of the people, & fraught with lawlessness & pursuit of personal rather than democratic objectives. The military coup in 1988, declaration of martial law, & the military's refusal to accept the outcome of the 1990 elections are portrayed as necessary measures to ensure the survival of Burmese society. It is argued here that military's intervention in government affairs more likely reflects long-held military values & ideologies, eg, the need for slow & gradual transition to democracy & the importance of development of discipline, sense of duty, & patriotism as precursors to democratic society.
