\"As a kid growing up, I had a big, strong dad who was always there to protect us or scare us if we got out of line,\" said Angela Dunning of Half Moon Bay, one of Mikels' three daughters. \"He was just a big presence in our lives and everyone's life.\" \"He wasn't interested in being famous or being a politician,\" she said. \"He really had a vision. He saw what this community could be and he saw what the county could be if we worked together and actually thought about the future and how to plan ahead.\" \"As an adult I am so glad I have a grounding in music,\" said [Jessica Appelgren], speaking of her father's love of music. \"That was, I would say, the way he meditated. That was one of the great passions of his life.\"
