Overview
Yesterday's seminar was organised to assess the European Commission's economic recommendations for Ireland, issued last week as part of the European Semester, the EU's new regime of policy co-ordination and surveillance. Despite highlighting concerns about healthcare costs, excessive legal fees and non-performing SME loans, the commission delivered a relatively upbeat assessment of the health of the Irish economy. However, Mr [Alan Dukes] said the Semester process was underpinned by Eurostat's annual growth survey which took little or no account of the monetary policy being pursued by the European Central Bank, which he maintained was inimical to economic growth. \"The erroneous mindset that held that the crisis in the euro zone is at root a fiscal crisis continues to reign and that, in my view, is to everyone's detriment.
