Overview
If you fly only a couple of times a year, you are in for a shock over the new airline-imposed rules on carry-on bags. Most of the nation's airlines have made it a point to try to separate you from your personal possessions. I witnessed gate agents taking away standard-size carry-ons from some passengers while allowing others to keep them --- even though there were empty bins aboard. The standard regulation wheeled suitcase is 22 inches high, by 14 inches wide, by 8 inches deep. The best advice: Take as little as possible on your trip. If you can, get one of the new junior carry-ons that are only 18 inches high and can fit easily in the overheads when other bags can't. Carry with you jewelry, electronics, laptop computers, money and other valuables, medications, tickets and passports. (Airlines will not compensate you anything for items that are tempting for their baggage handlers, such as jewelry.)
