Overview
After writing more than 1,200 Budget Traveler columns over the past nine years, I have decided to scale back. Starting in January, Clara Bosonetto, who has co-authored the Sunday column with me this year, will write two out of every three columns in Travel. She will continue to write the Budget Update column in Wednesday's Living section, as she has done so ably for the past year. Then changes I never could have imagined altered our travel landscape. First, TWA tried a discount operation in Atlanta, bringing great low fares for 18 months until it failed. Then Continental invaded with its CALite discount operation, with bargains up and down the Eastern Seaboard and the Midwest. CALite not only failed in Atlanta, but lost so much money nationally it almost put Continental out of business.
