*** rating The Commitments (R) Directed by Alan Parker. Written by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Roddy Doyle. Stars Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, Andrew Strong, Johnny Murphy, Maria Doyle. Rated R. for extremely earthy language. (118 min.) --- Still, to suggest that Parker achieves what [Robert Townshend] did not, may sound like the height of cultural tunnel vision. Perhaps Parker succeeds through default: He doesn't have to deal with as many heavy social issues as Townshend was obliged to tackle in his 30-year-chronicle. The talent round-up produces a lead singer named Deco (stunningly soulful 17-year-old newcomer Andrew Strong), found wailing in a drunken reverie at a wedding party; drummer Billy (Dick Massey), discovered banging away at a set in a Dublin pawnshop window; piano player Steven (Michael Aherne), erstwhile church organist; saxophonist Dean (Felim Gormley); and trumpeter Joey \"The Lips\" (Johnny Murphy), a fortysomething veteran who claims, somewhat dubiously, to have played with \"all the greats,\" including Elvis, the Beatles and [Wilson Pickett].
