SPRINGFIELD - Nearly four years after Horton Hobbs III slithered on hands and knees through a previously unexplored cave in the mountains of Tennessee, his vivid description of the trip is still entertaining armchair adventurers around the world. \"I backed off the edge of the cave entrance shaft and began my descent along the nylon climbing rope into the pit of darkness,\" Hobbs observed after entering the cave in May 1992. The 50-year-old Hobbs - a biology professor at Wittenberg University - is also one of the worlds most respected speleologists, or cave explorers.
