Overview
Englewood City Manager Eric Smith told investigators he knew the bills for legal work on his divorce were \"on the low end of what would normally be charged,\" but attributed it to \"professional courtesy,\" a sheriffs investigator testified Thursday. The firm also represented Smiths employer, the city of Englewood, in several legal matters. In addition, Richard Holzer, a partner in the firm, served as Englewoods part-time law director. Capt. Robert J. Spitler of the Montgomery County sheriffs office testified Thursday that Smith told him in July he \"assumed that there was some professional courtesy involved,\" and that the law firm was \"favoring him because of the relationship.\"
