Overview
When the Kon-Tiki theater opened in 1968, it was in the wake of the closing of longtime downtown theater institutions such as the RKO Keith's, Rialto, State and Mayfair. Dayton-area moviegoers were enjoying the larger modern theaters such as the Kon-Tiki and four theaters built in 1967: the Salem Mall, Fox Kettering, Page Manor and Fox North. The Kon-Tiki, built at 4100 Salem Ave., was operated by the Levin family, and was the brainchild and masterpiece of the late Samuel Levin.
