Overview
At the storm's peak Sunday afternoon, 114,357 Northeast Utilities customers in Connecticut and western Massachusetts were without power, along with 8,000 United Illuminating customers in southern Connecticut. As of midnight Sunday, about 51,000 Northeast Utilities customers in the state were still without electricity, NU spokesman Emmanuel Ford said. Power should be restored to most of them by this afternoon, he said. The gale-force winds dropped trees and branches across roads and power lines, knocked down traffic signs and fences, whipped debris onto roads and pushed cars around the highways. A gust of 70 mph was reported in Wethersfield. In Farmington, Dr. Anthony J. Bouckoms and his son Christopher died when a pine tree fell and crushed their car on Mountain Spring Road about 2:50 p.m. Bouckoms' wife, Alexia, and their 8-year- old son, Miles, were hospitalized in critical condition at Hartford Hospital late Sunday. Their daughter, Sarah, 10, was listed in stable condition at the same hospital.
