Overview
Alan Gotcher, chief executive of Reno-based Altair Nanotechnologies, said his company is designing lithium batteries that could power cars at conventional speeds and mileage ranges for as long as 15 years. Altair car batteries last up to 300 miles and can be recharged in eight minutes, he said. Ocean Power Technologies of Pennington, N.J., is designing buoys that can harness sea power. SunPower, of San Jose, Calif., makes and installs solar panels. GridPoint, of Washington D.C., aims to bring together energy from a variety of \"clean\" sources. GridPoint produces a refrigerator-sized appliance that can store energy and monitor its consumption, chief executive Peter Corsell said. A computer attached to the giant battery monitors energy the household consumes and when it uses it. Through a wireless connection to GridPoint, it also monitors the current price of energy, which can fluctuate as many as 37 times throughout the day, he said. The GridPoint appliance purchases power when it is cheapest, and stores it.
