Overview
Scientists including Robert Lanza at Advanced Cell Technology Inc., the first firm to clone a human embryo, say the findings mean researchers need a new way to create the cells before they can be tested in humans. That complicates efforts to get funding for the research because newly created embryonic stem-cell lines aren't eligible for federal money. That knowledge may help scientists figure out whether it is possible to purify existing stem-cell lines, [Fred Gage] said. By transferring stem cells into a feeding solution that includes no animal products, scientists may be able to salvage cell lines, he said. The contamination hasn't been a concern for stem cells taken from adult donors, according to Gage. Adult stem cells have typically been grown in a feeding solution that doesn't include tissue taken from mice or other animals, he said.
