Overview
Attack advertising either focuses on the trivial or exaggerates small chunks of reality. The purpose is profoundly negative: It depresses turnout. If you're disgusted with \"your\" candidate, you're less likely to vote. Consider Pennsylvania's attorney general race. It went one way, in favor of Democrat Joe Kohn, at the start of the night and ended up as a victory for Republican Mike Fisher. (It seemed so much in Mr. Kohn's control that the normally cautious Associated Press called the race early for Mr. Kohn. The AP then had to back off with egg on its face. We apologize to readers of about 10,000 York Daily Records that contained this inaccurate story.) The final margin of victory only was about 67,000 votes out of more than 4 million cast across the state. That's about the same number of people who voted for Bob Dole in York County.
