Overview
Mrs. Blackstone was 12 years old, one of 15 children in her family, said her daughter, Alice Smith of Pownal. It was about 1917, and young Christy Bradley moved to Portland to serve as a nanny to the children of a doctor. She stayed all the way through college. Mrs. Blackstone was well known in Pownal. She was the health officer, ballot clerk and substitute teacher. She also, along with her husband, the late Albert Blackstone, ran Blackstone's General Store. Mrs. Blackstone was a religious lady who rarely missed Mass. When she was younger, the closest church was in Freeport, which was connected to Pownal by a dirt road. It was often a muddy and difficult ride, but Mrs. Blackstone made sure the family arrived - clean - in church.
