Overview
When, for whatever reason, the LIRR cannot perform its job of transporting its customers, its responsibility is to provide clear, accurate and up-to-date information so commuters know exactly what their options are. This means having knowledgeable LIRR representatives giving continual announcements at area stations. In addition, the railroad should provide alternate means of transportation when train service is suspended. According to Mark Goodman, director of the Student Press Law Center, six states specifically protect student press rights in their education laws. Other states, like New York, protect student press rights through rulings of the education commissioner, based on the landmark Supreme Court decision during the Vietnam War that included student expression as a protected right. In New York, the commissioner's ruling that protects student press rights arose in a 1986 Lindenhurst case that supported the right of student editors to print comments critical of school board members. New York's commissioners of education should be congratulated for not compromising the state's high standards for student press rights. Donald Parker. Mineola. Editor's Note: The writer is co-author of the handbook.
