Overview
Yesterday, the bulls grabbed some of the good feeling back, but the bears still have a pretty good grip on the stock market. For investors, this has been a quick trip from giddiness to abject fear. Most frightening is the carnage among the technology stocks. Even after yesterday's rebounds, the Nasdaq is still bruised. What's happening? Here it is in nutshell: The fear of global inflation and growth has given way to fear of deflation and global economic disaster. It's a pretty quick flip for such a macroeconomic scenario. Basically, Wall Street thought the world was moving too fast way back in September. Now it thinks the world is moving too slowly. Part of the rebound was a realization that the deflation case had more sex appeal than fact appeal. Let's go over a couple of salient issues. The U.S. economy remains solid. The fact that Hong Kong is twisting Wall Street around underscores the fact that fear, more than fundamentals, is driving the markets right now.
