\"I noticed that a lot of movie theaters that I've known in my youth - the Valencia on Jamaica Avenue, the RKO Keith's in Flushing, the Drake on Woodhaven Boulevard - were closed,\" said [Jeff Gottlieb], 61, president of both the Central Queens Historical Association and the Queens Jewish Historical Society. \"I wanted to know why they were closed ... what made people quit these beautiful theaters.\" The Valencia and the Flushing RKO Keith's are the only two theaters in Queens recognized by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. However, only part of each theater was saved: the exterior of the Valencia, and the foyer and ticket booth of RKO Keith's. Once granted landmark status, no changes or renovations are allowed without the commission's approval. The process often pits the theater owner, who wants to make money off the property, against the community, which has an interest in preserving it. 1) New York City Department of Records - Kew Gardens Fox Theater on Queens Boulevard, 1940. It's now an office building. Central Queens Historical Association Photos - 2) RKO Keith's Theater in Flushing, 1970. The building is under development, but the ticket booth and foyer are city landmarks. 3) Loews Hillside Theatre on Sutphin Boulevard, 1928. It's now MTA offices. 4) Forest Hills Theater, Continental Avenue, 1923. A drugstore and office supply business occupy the site. 5) Trylon Theater in Rego Park, about 1940. The building is under construction. 6) Valencia Theater on Jamaica Avenue, 1937.
