Overview
[Marie Denayarro], 65, is one of 358 volunteers in the Stay Well Exercises for Older Adults program sponsored by the city Department for the Aging. (Most volunteers are in their 70s.) Since 1983, the department has been training seniors to lead their own exercise and health programs at a grass roots level in their own communities. Volunteers are taught the benefits of exercise, using standing and sitting low-impact movements designed to improve flexibility, endurance and strength. Stay Well is offered at 165 sites throughout New York City, mainly senior centers, group residences, churches and libraries. Three branches of the Queens Borough Public Library - Flushing, East Elmhurst and the central library in Jamaica - also offer the free weekly program. \"One of the reasons we train seniors is so they become loyal to their particular site,\" said Harriet Stollman, director of the health promotion unit at the Department for the Aging. \"We really give them the tools and, after the training is completed, it's really their program forever.\" Newsday Photo/Alan Raia - Seniors work with Marie Denayarro, leading an exercise class at Queens library in Flushing.
