For the past few months, ever since Hunter S. Thompson killed himself, I've been rereading \"Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72\" (Warner, $7.99), his account of the 1972 presidential campaign. This has turned out to be a revelatory experience, not least because it brings back just how vivid the author's work once was.
