Overview
[Jack Elliott] hoped to be a carpenter but carving fine objects in wood was to remain a leisure passion. He started work as a 14-year-old \"boy\" in an engineering works where his main job was to fetch the meat pies for the \"ten o'clock blow\". After apprenticeship and naval service he became a shop-steward, a Watford councillor and a board member of the Watford Theatre. He was a popular figure at our Devon extra-mural summer school - where he met [Pat] - throwing himself into academic work and social activity with his characteristic zest. Through adult education, Jack escaped from factory life, where his only satisfaction had come from union work.
