Overview
Still, there is much of [Dame Janet Baker] in her book. We learn of her loyalty to family, friends and professional colleagues, the pleasure she takes in reading and picnicking, walking along the beach and looking at the countryside; Dame Janet is an Englishwoman, and she loves her garden. She writes of her religion and movingly recalls some of the tragic events of her life, the death of her brother when he was still a child, and the death of her mother. Part of Dame Janet's appeal as a performer is that she seems such a thoroughly nice person (only once, in Britten's \"Owen Wingrave,\" was she cast against type); her writing, as clear and direct as her singing, confirms that appeal.
