Acompanada de su mama, Xica se encuentra sentada en el piso del Museo Metropolitano de Arte (Met) de Nueva York. Con ellas, un grupo de chicos hispanos construyen barquitos en hojas de papel rosado; mientras una instructora lee en espanol el cuento El barco de papel, del autor puertorriqueno Eugenio Maria de Hostos. Xica, al igual que su hermano, nacio en Nueva York y asiste a una escuela bilinge, donde su experiencia con el espanol paso del encuentro casual en las calles de la ciudad -donde mas de 186 nacionalidades se encuentran todos lo dias- a su salon de clases. En esta ocasion, Xica no solo era la unica del grupo que no hablaba espanol, era ademas la mas pequena; pero cuando [Patricia Loyosa] repartio papel y lapiz para que dibujaran su obra favorita, la nina se tumbo feliz en el suelo para dibujar su version de Lilith (1994), la escultura en bronce de la estadounidense Kiki Smith que parece trepar las paredes del museo.
