Overview
\"We're not unique in this,\" [Joe Ahern] said Tuesday, after what he described as \"a long hard day\" executing the layoffs on Monday. \"The economic conditions are awful. ...We're in an economic environment where it just demands close scrutiny.\" \"We live in really tight times,\" said Bruce DuMont, founder and president of the Museum of Broadcast Communications. \"Primarily, it's the economy, but there's also high expectations for stations to deliver.\" \"I can't speak for other stations,\" Ahern said, and other station heads declined to comment. But it seems clear that the days Ahern could drive up salaries across town by boasting of \"an open checkbook\" are over - at least for now.
