The board focused its Wednesday discussions on need rather thanlocation. Despite the technologys existence for roughly 30 years, onlya limited amount of research has been done on the benefits versustraditional radiation treatments, hospital officials told the board. One report Central DuPage officials cited came from St. JudesChildrens Hospital in Memphis. Doctors there said proton treatmentsshould one day be the sole method for treating cancer-stricken childrento lessen the damaging side effects of traditional radiation therapy.
