Overview
You don't win Le Mans 14 times without good reason. One of Porsche's greatest but most maligned creations was the 944. Conceived as a proper version of the terrible 924, like most Porsches it began life on the track, appropriately at Le Mans. The 944, you see, is effectively the 924 GT Turbo of 1980 Le Mans fame. Most importantly, the 944 was a departure for Porsche because it placed the motor up front and this, along with hours on the Computer- Aided Design system, endowed it with handling the world's motoring press termed a gift from the gods.
