Overview
Pioneering this movement in music is Massive Attack, a small collective of DJs, singers and studio wizards who hail from small- town Bristol, England. Several years back when electronic music was nothing more than keyboard pyrotechnics, Massive Attack released the debut album, Blue Lines, which helped create a new direction in dance-based pop. The musical roots of trip-hop can be traced to the early British rap scene: In 1983 a group of Bristolians converged to form the Wild Bunch sound system. Among their ranks was Nellee Hooper (who went on to produce \"Protection\" as well as albums for Bjork and Madonna). The group held impromptu club parties where, drawing on the diverse talent and inspiration of its members, it would produce an outlandish blend of music. Robert Del Naja (3-D), Grant Marshal (Daddy G) and Andrew Vowles (Mushroom) came out of that scene in 1987 to form the creative core of Massive Attack and three years later signed to Circa records. Since then, the group has charted a path through the terrain of disparate musical genres, breaking boundaries and creating a modernized version of World Music.
