Overview
Cradled at the base of Mount Juneau and encircled by the 17 million-square-mile Tongass National Forest (the country's largest), Juneau (pop. 31,000) is about as remote a town as you'll find anywhere. With no roads reaching it -- accessible only by air or sea -- owning a second home here is one of the more extreme examples of getting away. That's why it landed on the radar of Marty Robbins. \"I realize it's a bit out of the way, but there's absolutely nothing like it anywhere in the lower 48. I can guarantee that,\" he said. \"Arriving here feels like touching down in an exotic land. It's easy to forget that you're still in the United States, at least until you see the American flags flying on front porches.\" \"It's a long way from New Jersey, but that's what makes it so appealing to me. Coming here really means not only leaving my worries behind, but everything else, too,\" Robbins said. \"In our world there are relatively few places where you can do that with a certain level of comfort. Juneau is one such place.\"
