Overview
'We must maintain our quality standards and we must ensure everybody who goes into these institutions gets a proper education.' Mr [Robin McAlpine] said university principals did not want social class to be a barrier to university entrance but said they were determined that standards should not fall just to create 'good headline figures' on state and private school entries. Mr McAlpine said that while universities in England relied heavily on interviews to decide which students to accept, Scottish universities used academic achievement as the sole basis for entrance.
