Overview
The eight who were killed on Sept. 18, 1879, were buried quickly after the daylong fight with Warm Springs Apache warriors led by Victorio, a fabled figure in the Indian Wars. Victorio had rebuked the Army's attempts to send the Warm Springs Apaches from their home in the Black Range to the San Carlos reservation in Arizona. At nightfall, the Apaches withdrew and the Buffalo Soldiers retreated to lick their wounds. Black regiments, serving in the Indian Wars from 1861-98, gained the name Buffalo Soldiers from Indians because the soldiers' hair looked to the Indians like buffalo fur. The troops were led by White commissioned officers.
