Overview
The study found that drunken drivers sentenced to a 28-day jail and treatment program in San Juan County were much less likely to repeat the crime than DWI offenders who received other punishment. Judges in San Juan County initially agreed to sentence all first- time DWI offenders to the program. The slogan for a public- awareness campaign in 1996 was \".08 will get you 28,\" referring to the state's blood-alcohol limit for drivers and the length of the program. TREATMENT CENTER: About half of those convicted of a first or second DWI offense in San Juan County are sentenced to the 28- day program at the DWI Detention and Treatment Facility.; Photo: JOURNAL FILE; b/w
