Overview
In boys 4A play, Capital High School's Marcus Martinez surprised the field by shooting a 2-under 70 to assume a two-stroke advantage over Albuquerque Academy's Casey Caldwell. A junior, Martinez finished the front nine at 1-under 35 before opening the back with three birdies and a par. Martinez's teammate, Paul Romero, struggled to a 79 after a rough outing on the back nine. Angel Fire resident Jim Honea, a senior who competes for Albuquerque Academy, also had problems; he checked in with an 83. Los Alamos senior Brandon Rich and Eric Trujillo each shot a 4- over 76 to lead the Hilltoppers. Mike McCloskey had a 77 and Robert McAtee had an 84 as Los Alamos made a bid to steal today's team championship.
