Overview
I HAVE seen the future of Scottish football and its name is Middlesbrough FC. Eternal denizens of the mid-to-bottom range of the Premiership and below, Middlesbrough attract too many sniffy remarks from those who view the world through scarlet-tinted glasses. Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool they ain't, but in several respects Middlesbrough could teach their English peers and all of Scottish football, even the Old Firm, a huge lesson. For Middlesbrough might just have the best football academy in the UK and one of the best in Europe. Don't take my word for it. Ask Scotland's sports minister Rhona Brankin; Roger Mitchell, chief executive of the Scottish Premier League; Peter Donald of the Scottish Football League; Tony Higgins of the Scottish Professional Footballers Association; and the others who make up the Scottish Football Taskforce whose first priority is to establish football academies across Scotland.
