Overview
IT BEGAN with the words: I SawYou. When James Barbour, an Edinburgh University student with an essay crisis, walked into a student bookstore, he was dazzled by Carolyn Leslie, the girl behind the counter. But, unable to summon the courage to ask her for a date, he relied on a peculiarly Scottish phenomenon to woo the woman who had stolen his heart: the I Saw You column in the List magazine. Mr Barbour placed an advert in the section, where lovelorn but starstruck people send a declaration of love to someone they may have only glimpsed. He hoped for a reply, but did not expect one: four years on, the pair are happily married. Umbrella Productions, the Scottish production company, is working on a version of I Saw You, set in and around Glasgow, to be broadcast on Scottish Television in August. Granada Television will screen a drama under the same title starring actress Fay Ripley next Monday. The productions are a testament to the phenomenon brought to the UK by the listings magazine the List in 1992.
