Overview
\"They came seeking asylum from political pressure,\" says Abdallah Samuel Adelo, a second-generation Lebanese-American whose father emigrated from Lebanon and eventually opened a store in the village of Pecos in 1919. Adelo says his father, who was also named Sam, came to New Mexico via New York City, while many of the older Adelo brothers settled elsewhere, including Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay. Adelo says that after the brothers left Lebanon, they changed their last name to Adelo from Abdallah, which means \"servant of God\" in Arabic.
