Overview
In 1995, two 18-year-olds, inspired by Oliver Stone's extremely violent movie Natural Born Killers, went on a shooting spree in Louisiana. They killed one man and crippled Patsy Byers, a mother of three. In response, Byers sued Stone and Warner Bros. for making and distributing the film, alleging they \"knew or should have known that the film would cause and inspire people to commit (such) crimes.\" While the First Amendment would generally protect the free- speech rights of Stone and Warner Bros., the Louisiana Court of Appeals held that the defendants would be liable if Byers could prove that by producing and distributing the movie they intended to incite people to commit violent crimes. Perhaps it was such a video that inspired President Bush to challenge those attacking U.S. troops in Iraq to \"bring them on.\" That was three years ago, after he had declared major combat in Iraq ended and when only 65 U.S. troops had died.
