Overview
Although a series of societies including Lambeth and Universal have surrendered to bigger players in recent months, Norman MacKenzie, chief executive of Edinburghbased Century, said it would continue to go its own way. MacKenzie, who runs the 107-year-old Century with a handful of staff, believes being small allows the society to offer a personal approach that pays real dividends in an increasingly impersonal age. \"We can offer a fast and flexible service with ease of access to staff who are in a position to make decisions as opposed to the frustrations of dealing with a lengthy and time consuming decision- making hierarchy or call centre.\" While net assets increased from GBP20,442,399 to GBP22,261,184 in calendar 2005, amounts due to Century under mortgages slipped from GBP16,194,810 to GBP16,173,676.
