Overview
He said: \"An old wartime left-hand drive Willys Jeep came on to the estate and my father attached wooden blocks to the pedals and gave me lessons off-road. I could drive by the time I was seven.\" Mr [Duncan MacRae] can well remember the hairy trip back from Glasgow where he bought his first car - the Consul. \"There were no tyre tread regulations or MoTs in those days and the bald tyres were screeching on every corner,\" he said. The worst? A sporty rear-engined Renault Dauphine which had a habit of \"losing it\" on the twisty Highland roads.
