Overview
After Holy Communion, they and around 350 walkers set off from the West Door of Ripon Cathedral to walk the four miles to the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey in the valley of the River Skell to the west of the city. It was the route taken by a small group of monks from St Mary's Abbey in York, who stayed overnight in Ripon at Christmas 1132, before making the journey that ended with the foundation of Fountains Abbey.
