Overview
The Iraqi port of Umm Qasr is now secure following sweeps by Royal Marines, paving the way for the first deliveries of aid to Iraqi civilians. Today Australian and US mine clearance teams were preparing the port to receive a shipment of aid from the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Sir Galahad, carrying water, food, medical supplies and other emergency relief for civilians. The port will come under the control of Britain's 17 Port and Maritime Regiment whose navigators and pilots will guide vessels in as vital aid cargo is unloaded.
