Overview
Three New Zealand luxury lodges made the top 20 in the prestigious Andrew Harper's Hideaway September report on international resort hideaways. Ellen Davies visited Wharekauhau on the south Wairarapa coast to discover its charms. Each guest is greeted by name on arrival, and Mr [Bruce Garrett] chats with them as they wander through the lodge. Traditional Kiwi hospitality was part of the attraction, he said -- the guests enjoyed chatting with the staff, who at a ratio of 30:20 on most occasions outnumbered the guests. Mr Garrett said New Zealand's luxury lodges complemented each other, with a trail informally established as international visitors \"lodge hop\".
